The effect of diphenylhydantoin on the electroretinogram of rabbits. I. Effect of concentration.

The effects of diphenylhydantoin (DPH) on in vitro rabbit retinas were studied. DPH, 10M., inhibited the appearance of the P II (b-wave) and the P HI component of the electroretinogram (ERG), while 10-* M. DPH increased the P II and P III amplitudes. DPH of 10M. or lower concentrations did not affect the ERG. The DPH response was the same whether perfusion was from the receptor cell side or ganglion cell side. The effect of DPH was transient, except for the prolongation of the P II implicit time, and the effect was reversible.
